Abstract
Purposes : To evaluate clinical performance of the fenestrated cosmetic colored
contact lenses developed for improving oxygen transmissibility under closed eye
condition during two hours.

Methods : Thirty subjects(26.7¡¾3.6 yrs.)(13 males and 17 females) enrolled in the study did not have any complications related to contact lens wear. One eye selected randomly were fitted clear SCL(Vifilcon A), colored SCL(Hanamedicon Co.) and fenestrated colored SCL(Hanamedicon Co.) at 1 week intervals. The eye wearing contact lens was closed by patch during two hours and the other eye was opened at same periods. We measured corneal thickness, anterior and posterior best-fit sphere radius by Orbscan¥± Pachymetry(v. 3.12), slit lamp biomicroscopy by CCLRU scale and subjective symptoms by questionnaire.

Results : Central corneal swelling were clear SCL(3.6¡¾2.9%), fenestrated colored SCL(6.8¡¾3.0%) and colored SCL(8.9¡¾2.9%), respectively. The anterior best-fit sphere radius unchanged in response to clear SCL and fenestrated colored SCL and flattened slightly but significantly with colored SCL(0.04¡¾0.06 mm). The posterior best-fit sphere radius flattened significantly with colored SCL(0.08¡¾0.09 mm). There were significant differences for radius of curvature of steeper meridian. The curvature of steeper meridian changed more steeper with all SCL. The CCLRU scale were grade 1 or below in the eye weared clear SCL, and in the eye weared fenestrated color SCL, CCLRU scale were grade 2 or below. But in the eye weared color SCL, CCLRU scale showed grade 2 or above in some wearers. Subjective symptoms were significant different between clear SCL vs. colored SCL, and between fenestrated colored SCL vs. colored SCL, but was no significant difference between clear SCL vs. fenestrated colored SCL.

Conclusions : The fenestration was effected to improve clinical performance of colored SCL, but the futher studies were needed to increase clinical performance of fenestrated colored SCL at level of clear SCL.
